What is a sacrament?

Sacrament is taken from the Latin word 'sacramentum' which means 'a sign of the sacred'. Sacraments therefore point to the most sacred and important moments in the life of a Christian. These are special celebrations in the life of a Catholic and it is a joy to share these moments with you as a church community.

All Sacraments are an encounter with Christ, who is himself the original sacrament. There are sacraments of initiaton, which introduce the recipient to faith: BaptismHoly Communion, Confirmation. There are sacraments of healing: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. And there are sacraments of communion and mission: Marriage and Holy Orders.
(taken from YOUCAT - the youth catechism of the Catholic church)

Each of the sacraments have their own intricacies, details and processes so please click on the words or on the drop down menu to find out more about each one. There you will also be able to find out how you might go about receiving them for yourself or if you are looking for family or friends.
